September 5th, 2011 switched mobile phone providers

Survey reveals almost 20 million UK adults have never switched mobile phone provider – and it may have cost them cash
Almost 20 million Britons have never switched mobile phone provider and could be missing out on significant savings as a result, according to Which? Mobile. In a survey it also found that 5.3 million people said they spent less since switching mobile provider.

The organisation questioned 8,001 members of the public about their experiences when they switched provider. It found those who have been put off switching because they anticipate a lengthy and difficult process should think again, with nine out of 10 consumers finding it easy.

It said 44% of adults who own mobile phones have never switched provider, equating to about 20 million people, while 48% of adults who have switched in the past two years (about 6 million people) said they had spent less than they did with their previous provider.

Tom McLennan from Which? Mobile said: “If you have been with the same mobile provider for years, the chances are you could find a better deal elsewhere. With so many tariffs out there it pays to shop around, either through a comparison site or by checking out what different networks have to offer.”

A quarter (26%) of those who switched provider did so for a more competitive tariff, Which? said, with only 16% switching for a better handset and 14% seeking a provider that offered improved coverage and reception.

Which? Mobile also found that for pay monthly customers phone features are the most important factor when choosing a new handset, with recommendations from retailers or providers of little significance. For pay-as-you-go customers the cost of the handset is the deciding factor.

The organisation also said a “surprising” statistic was that nine out of 10 people still go to a mobile phone store to choose a new phone rather than using online comparison sites – despite Which? also finding that most mobile salespeople push phone insurance – something it regularly flags as a waste of money because consumers’ handsets are (or can be) covered by their home insurance.

Indeed, mobile phone insurance featured in Which?’s top 10 useless financial products last year.

In a previous survey on mobile phones, Which? said Asda Mobile and Tesco Mobile came top among pay-as-you-go providers, while the best contract and sim-only provider for customer service was Tesco, followed by O2.

August 22nd, 2011 Third of Brits would rather lose their wallet

Some 64% of consumers told YouGov they would rather hold onto their wallet, with younger people being most likely to value their smartphone over their wallet.

source – www.mobilechoices.co.uk

The study, on behalf of Firstsource Solutions, found that 42% of people aged 16-24 and 34% of 25- to 34-year-olds cared more about their smartphone than their wallet – compared to just 19% of 45- to 54-year-olds.

Santanu Nandi, executive vice president of the telecom and media division at Firstsource Solutions, said: “The fact that so many people would rather lose their wallet than their smartphone shows how indispensable these devices have become to the kind of lives we now lead.

“This information will be useful for mobile phone service providers who need to provide round the clock customer service and technical support for their ‘power users’.

He added: “With half the people surveyed yet to switch over to a smartphone, their importance is only likely to increase in years to come.”

Other research by YouGov earlier this month showed that just one in five Brits currently have mobile phone insurance, with 60% admitting they have never had a policy.

The most common reason was that consumers didn’t think their phone was expensive enough to justify insurance (49%), while 29% didn’t think mobile phone insurance was worth the money.

July 21st, 2011 BBc Launch 3G Survey in the UK

The BBC has launched an Android app in order to map the nation’s mobile phone reception.

The free app will record each handset’s mobile phone signal all the time the phone is switched on, with the data then plotted on an interactive map.

“If we succeed, this should yield some interesting results,” writes the BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones, the driving force behind the project.

All the rage

“It could tell us, for instance, whether our mobile networks are capable of delivering broadband connectivity in parts of the country where the fixed line service is patchy, whether coverage across cities is consistently good, and whether some operators are supplying a better service than others.”

Unfortunately, only Android users can take part, “for technical reasons”, according to Cellan-Jones, which he clarified on Twitter, saying “reason for no iPhone app – harder to make work in background”.

No timescale has been given for the project just yet, but once the results have been collated the map will be published on the BBC’s website.
